£24million Leeds Investment into Low-Carbon Energy for Thousands of Homes

Written on .

Leeds City Council has announced an investment of £24million into green technologies for homes in the city. The council are currently out to tender for a provider to design, develop and deliver the six new environmentally-friendly heating networks. In other words, this Leeds property investment is set to supply thousands of Leeds council homes.

Sustainable technologies in Leeds property investment

The scheme forms part of the council’s plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions for Leeds. This multi-million pound investment into Leeds property will distribute low-carbon heating from central sources rather than individual boilers.

Green technologies currently under consideration by the council include ground and air source heat pumps and a biomass system.

Currently, about a quarter of carbon emissions from the Leeds area comes from the energy used to provide heating and hot water to the city’s homes.

    Carbon-neutral Leeds

Director of Resources and Housing, Neil Evans, said. “This major new investment in green technologies and district heating networks is a great example of that and builds upon actions that we are already taking to improve energy efficiency; such as retrofitting older council homes and requiring new build council homes to meet a minimum B rating.”

Councillor Debra Couper, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Communities, added. “Not only will this investment directly benefit many residents for years to come, but it will also help decarbonise more of the city’s homes. And cut the council’s own carbon footprint; as we lead by example and work towards becoming a carbon-neutral city.”

It is hoped that the £24million investment will start providing low-carbon-powered heating to residents as early as the end of 2020. This will save the council around 950 tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. Therefore, it will help tenants reduce their energy bills by around 10%.

    Greener property investments

The investment is just the latest in the journey to make Leeds a truly green city. As well as benefiting council tenants, this has led to plenty of opportunities for people keen to make an environmentally-friendly Leeds property investment.

The Climate Innovation District in the new South Bank area of Leeds is a £125million scheme that will also provide low-carbon heating to the 1-4 bedroom homes located there.

Some of the Leeds property investments near the Climate Innovation District include Victoria Riverside Apartments and Green Quarter.

With the Climate Innovation District also housing office and leisure space as well as manufacturing facilities; investors into properties here will benefit from the increased demand for homes in the area.
