Liverpool Station and Lewis’s set to be Upgraded

Written on .

Liverpool has announced two additional redevelopment projects. Lewis’s and Liverpool Station is to be upgraded. This will further prove that the city is one of the most forward-moving in the UK.

    Lewis’s Resurgence

Lewis’s remains one of the most iconic buildings in the centre of Liverpool, Liverpool station is also to be upgraded alongside Lewis’s. Created by Sir Jacob Epstein , it is most known for it’s distinctive bronze statue. The statue stands above the main entrance and symbolises the resurgence of Liverpool following World War II. This Grade II listed building on Ranelagh Street will soon be repurposed into a retail and leisure complex named ‘Circus’.

Since Lewis’s closed its doors for the last time in 2010 the symbolic building has been left empty. Now, Augur Group plan to redevelop the building into a new high-class retail and leisure facility. The site sits in the heart of Liverpool’s city centre, with Simon Mann, Augur Group’s Chief Executive passing comment. “The company is already in discussions with a number of key potential tenants. Including cinema operators and with large leisure and restaurant groups.”

    Central Station Expansion

Liverpool Central Station will undergo major upgrade works to expand the facility as well as improve transport connections. Network Rail and Merseytravel are planning to increase the station’s capacity. This will therefore provide sufficient infrastructure for passenger numbers to increase. It will also create a vital new link between Edge Hill Station and Liverpool Central Station. As one of the UK’s busiest rail stations this work is much needed.
