To transform Leeds rail station into a UK transport gateway, plans have been released. This new Leeds Station will improve transport in the UK. In addition, travel times to other key Northern Powerhouse cities and the rest of the UK will be greatly reduced. To grow as an economic hotspot in the North this should significantly help Leeds.
The new station will create a transport hub, connecting national, regional and local transport with HS2 and the Northern Powerhouse Rail. This project is a key part of the South Bank redevelopment plans. It is expected to help connect other parts of Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region with the local community.
It is predicted that HS2 will have a major impact on the Leeds economy. Boosting job creation, education and tackling poverty in deprived areas. The Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Judith Blake, says “the arrival of high-speed rail is essential to helping Leeds and the wider region fully realise its massive potential.” Connecting Leeds with the rest of the country – and ultimately the world – will consequently have a massive positive economic impact on the city.
Plans for the new station include a possible three million square feet of new commercial space around the station. 7,000 square metres of space within the facility will contain leisure and retail. Passenger numbers have significantly increased due to the new station’s increased capacity.
Improved Road Network
As part of the project, the road infrastructure around the station will also be re-developed. Streets will be pedestrianised directly next to and under the station and the wider road network will be re-modelled. Furthermore, the nearby dark arches will become additional retail and leisure spaces.
Therefore, these plans are proving the commitment Leeds has to becoming a major player in the UK and European economies.
