Leeds Bradford Airport will be submitting new plans to develop a £150 million state-of-the-art terminal.
The New Leeds Bradford Terminal
The plans, which are due to be submitted in April 2020, will detail the construction of a three-floor terminal on a brand new site. The terminal will replace an existing scheme and current building. Thereby improving passenger experience and economic growth, all the while ensuring a high level of environmental efficiency.
If approved, the airport, which currently sees 4 million passengers a year, will have a new 34,000 sq mt terminal with luxury shopping, dining and bar options, all surrounded by stunning modern interiors. Its suggested location will be near a proposed new rail link. Therefore, increasing the efficiency of passenger transfer to the airport. The new terminal will also enable Leeds Bradford Airport to meet its net zero carbon emissions target by 2023.
The current terminal at Leeds Bradford Airport dates back to 1965 and is in need of modernisation. Currently owned by AMP Capital is the airport. AMP Capital originally agreed to invest £12 million into the airport however, Leeds Bradford Airport’s Chief Executive, Hywel Rees rejected. After going back to the board of AMP he was able to negotiate the new £150 million investment figure.
Developing a Modern Centre of Global Connectivity
Hywel Rees explains the plans: “This proposal is not about growing beyond our predicted capacity; it is about meeting the same demand in a more efficient way, with a smaller environmental footprint. We’re confident that a vision will deliver an airport building that is better placed to support out region’s economic growth and become one that Yorkshire can be proud of.”
Expected to increase by 75% over the next 10 years is the number of passengers using Leeds Bradford Airport. Consequently, this will put pressure on the local transport systems, and there has been an acknowledged need to improve infrastructure around the airport. Hoped to help create improved connectivity in the region is the £150 million investment.
Updating Leeds Bradford Airport has links to the wider Northern Powerhouse Initiative. Developing a modern centre of global connectivity in the region should bring with it further economic prosperity and international recognition.
