Why Manchester is Leading Healthcare Innovation

Written on .

Manchester has long been home to groundbreaking healthcare innovation. It was here that the first test tube babies came into the world, and where hip replacement surgery and bionic eye implants were originally pioneered. Highlighting why Manchester is leading in healthcare innovation. The healthcare industry is just one cornerstone of Manchester’s economy. But with over 30 NHS organisations and 157,000 people making up the sector’s workforce, it is an important one.

    Devolved Budget

Manchester is the only region of the UK to have a devolved healthcare budget, currently at £6 billion. It is also the only place to have integrated its health and social care sectors. This has created fantastic opportunities to lead the way in the development of new systems and technologies. As well as the improvement of patient care and the testing of integrated delivery methods.

A further benefit of devolution is that all health and social care commissioning takes place at a local level, ensuring access to Manchester’s numerous NHS organisations – one of the largest in the UK. Its enhanced digital-health facilities also help to enable first-class informatics research and clinical trials.

    Groundbreaking Research

With a number of world-class research centres in Manchester including its leading universities, as well as the almost 13,500 graduates of life sciences and related subjects, it’s no wonder why Manchester is leading the way in healthcare research and innovation.

The Christie, Europe’s largest single-site cancer centre, is based in Manchester. It has helped the city become recognised as a leading location for cancer research and care. Manchester is also playing a major role in other areas of healthcare by investing large sums into innovative research. Including Manchester Molecular Pathology Innovation Centre, Stoller Biomarker Discovery Centre and the Centre for Genomics Medicine Research. The UK Biobank – a long-term study into the development of disease – can also be found here.

    Thriving Sector

The health and social care industry is a key driver of Manchester’s economy. It has a GVA of £4 billion and is a hotspot for global pharmaceutical, healthcare and MedTech companies. With a strong history of successful collaboration between academia, industry and the NHS, Manchester offers opportunities for new research, development and implementation thanks to the expertise and support from the different organisations.

Health Innovation Manchester – a partnership whose objective is to improve the health of the almost 3 million people living in the region – is based here too. This unique partnership aims to meet its admirable objective by decreasing the time it takes to discover, develop and deliver innovations in health and social care.
