Leeds property investment is taking a new turn as it is set to be home to a new Conservative Party headquarters. The announcement was made at the party’s virtual conference at the beginning of October, as was the news that staff would be moving from London to Leeds.
The success story of the North- Leeds property investment
The strong economy, good transport links and top universities makes Leeds a strong and secure location for the new headquarters.
Neil Lee, Professor of economic geography at LSE called Leeds “the unsung success story of the north” and that the city was “a particular exception” to the UK’s difficulty in developing affluent big cities.
Leeds is the UK’s fastest-growing city. It has the most diverse economy of all of the UK’s employment centres. It even has the highest rate of jobs growth in the country. Leeds is also home to the UK’s fourth largest urban economy as well as the country’s fourth largest student population.
A strategic location
Another reason that Leeds has been chosen for the new Conservative Party headquarters; is its strategic location in the centre of the north. This not only makes it a good choice for the party headquarters, but Leeds property investments too.
As well as its excellent connectivity to other Northern Powerhouse cities; Leeds will provide the Conservative Party with a base in the Conservative-voting areas of the north. Amanda Milling, co-chair of the party stated that. “The best way we can deliver for people there is to be there.”
Leeds University Lecturer in British politics, Tim Heppell, said that the Conservative’s new headquarters in Leeds will “demonstrate their commitment to the north.”
Investment opportunities
With such an important announcement, there also comes opportunities for new Leeds property investments.
According to Neil Lee, “The government is pushing things like a northern economy campus, where large numbers of civil servants will go.” Although it is not yet clear whether the staff who are relocating will be decision makers or back-office staff, these civil servants will need somewhere in Leeds to live.
The announcement may also encourage other young professionals to stay in or move to Leeds. In the past people keen to work for the government may have moved to London; these new civil service job opportunities could encourage them to stay in Leeds. This will further add to tenant demand in the city and a healthy market for Leeds property investments.
